Domain vs Hosting – What's the Difference and Why You Need Both?
Building a home on the internet? Learn why a domain is your address and hosting is the land the building stands on.
For many people, these concepts merge into one. "I have to pay for the internet" – I often hear. However, in the world of websites, these are two completely different services, although inextricably linked.
1. Domain (e.g., webilo.pl)
It is your company's unique address on the web. It's what the customer types into the browser bar.
- Builds brand
- Easy to remember
2. Hosting (Server)
It is the physical place (a computer connected to the network 24/7) where your website files are kept: photos, texts, code.
- Operation speed
- Data security
Real-life analogies
Imagine you are building a house.
- Domain is your address (5 Flower St.) that you type into navigation to get there.
- Hosting is the plot of land on which the house stands. Without a plot, the address would lead nowhere.
- Website is the building itself (walls, furniture, decor).
Important: Both services are usually paid for in an annual model (subscription). If you stop paying for the domain, someone else can take it. If you don't pay for hosting, the site disappears from the web.
